Moving up in the ranks

There are several ways that a marine can get promoted. First off is the meritorious promotion. This is usually given to a Marine whose overall performance is consistently extraordinary and worthy to be an example to his fellow Marines and to everyone else as well. This kind of promotion is not a reward nor is it based on commendations by just any person or group. A meritorious promotion solely depends on the Marine’s way of performing his duties in an exceptional manner. There are two types of Meritorious Promotions. These are the Combat Meritorious Promotion and the Non-combat Meritorious Promotion programs.

Showing outstanding leadership under fire

Marines who are recommended for promotion under the Combat Meritorious Promotion program are those who have shown unusual leadership in a combat situation which is not ordinarily seen in the men and women of the Marines of the same level. The Marine must show a certain level of leadership which is far and advanced than that of his current grade and in comparison with all the other Marines of his level. This promotion which is awarded by the Commanding General is regardless of the Marine’s length of service.

Outstanding performance in a non-combat situation

There are non-combat acts that will also equal a promotion in the Marines. One of these is a national, international or any higher level competition for marksmanship. Another reason for a meritorious promotion is in having invented a new weapon or gadget. Additionally Marines who are able to develop a system or a technique that has a significant, positive, and lasting impact on the entire Marine Corp will also merit a promotion.

Promotion based on score

The most basic way a Marine can get promoted however is through the Composition Score. The composition score makes up everything about being a Marine. These aspects are his or her TIS or Time in Service, TIG Time in Grade, the Marine’s Rifle Score, Physical Fitness Test (PFT) score, Combat Fitness Test (CFT) score, his or her average at the MCI or the Marine Corps Institute, at a regular college, and during recruitment as well.
